Thinking on Energy Bars

Energy bars hit the scene several years ago and have been extremely popular ever since. People love getting that quick burst of energy in a way they think is healthy.

But some are better for you than others.

Too many have quite a bit of sugar in one form or another, or artificial sweeteners, which many like to avoid on priniciple or because they consider them unhealthy.

You should always check the ingredient list and think about the quality of the ingredients. It is not uncommon for better ones to range about $2 per bar. That’s pricey for a quick snack in some ways, but if you’re getting something that is healthier for you than a candy bar it’s probably a good thing.

Speaking of candy bars, consider that too many energy bars have about the same number of calories and aren’t much healthier. If you aren’t sure about which you should buy, try comparing the nutrition information, including things such as calories, fat and vitamins, of an energy bars to a candy bar. You’ll get a good idea as to what you are getting yourself into.

If You Can’t Stand the Heat…

It’s probably time to cool off for a little.

One of the biggest dangers when you exercise outdoors during the summer is overheating. Heatstroke is serious. Your body’s temperature goes over 104 degrees F, you can’t sweat, you’re cramped, breathing is shallow and your skin is hot and dry.

One of the simplest ways to avoid heatstroke is to not exercise outdoors during the hottest part of the day. This can be challenging if you’re hiking or playing at the beach, when the hottest part of the day is a fairly popular time to be out. Continue reading “If You Can’t Stand the Heat…”

My Diet, Your Diet, Their Diet, All Different

It’s easy to jump onto the latest fad diet and hope it works for you. That’s how they become fads after all. They do great for certain people.

But no diet is right for everyone. Much depends on which one you can comfortably stick with, avoiding the guilt when you fail. After all, quitting a diet is a major cause of putting the weight back on.

The best diet for you is the one you can stick with, not the one your best friend can stick with. There will be some differences in exactly how you and another person react to a given diet will be slightly different. And it will not necessarily be clear what the difference between the two of you is.

There’s nothing wrong with figuring out which diet is right for you. You should not feel utterly deprived in your diet. It should allow you some amount of indulgence, but not an excess.

Exercise in the Sand

Playing in the water isn’t the only way you can exercise at the beach, even if it is one of the most popular ways. But if you aren’t in the mood to get wet or if you’ve just had enough, there’s plenty you can do on the sand.

Running, for example. This is probably best done on sand that is wet enough that you aren’t struggling through it.

Walking is good too. You know how different walking on the sand feels in comparison to walking on a firm surface. It is something of a workout.

Volleyball is also a very popular beach game. You just have to find a place where it can be played. Generally if it’s available there will be nets set up. If you want to do it yourself you may find it challenging sometimes to find enough room to set up your game. Continue reading “Exercise in the Sand”
