What is Detoxification?

If you spend a lot of time reading about fitness, you have probably heard about detoxification. It’s supposed to be marvelous for your body. But what exactly is it?

Detoxification, just as the name implies, is a routine intended to remove toxins from your body. These toxins build up from your regular lifestyle. It’s not just the foods you eat, it’s everything in the environment.

I have no idea how truly effective detoxification is, but I do know that if I do a detoxification routine, I can cut down on my urges to eat candy and other unhealthy foods. I can’t say whether that’s physical or mental, but it works for me.

So how do you detoxify your body?

I’ve never done a detoxification in depth – I’ve always just focused on detoxifying my digestion, since that helps me to eat healthier for a long time. I don’t take pills or do anything fancy. I merely concentrate on eating foods that tend to clean things out.

My detoxification routine, which I read in a natural health book some years back, takes a couple days. The first day is just fruit and water. Lots of water. The second you can add vegetables. You can do a third day if you like. Foods such as bananas are generally avoided.

Does this really work? Once again, I have no idea. I know I feel better afterward. Could be psychological, I don’t know.

I’m something of a chronic skeptic, and don’t really believe the claims of the various pills one can take for a deeper detoxification. So many things are nothing more than quack medicine. I prefer to stick with things that are safer and that I understand at least a little.

Detoxing definitely works. I’ve done it my whole life, with great results. If you think about all the chemicals in our food, air and water, detoxing on a regular basis just makes sense. Add to that the fact that many drugs for heart disease, cholesterol, and mood swings can cause constipation. A constipated colon is a toxic colon.
