What is the South Beach Diet?

There are many diet fads out there and it’s hard to keep track of which is which and which is right for you. So much depends on your metabolism that you have to be ready to face the fact that not all diets work well for all people.

The South Beach Diet involves lifestyle changes. It’s not just a diet you do for a short time. You need to have willpower in order to succeed because temptation is all around.

As with many modern diets, there are certain foods that are prohibited when you are on the South Beach Diet. The main emphasis, however, is on cutting carbohydrates. Few foods are utterly forbidden. Drinking water is also emphasized, which is healthy no matter what diet you are on.

Caffeine intake is also limited. Too much caffeine isn’t good for you in any case. One cup of coffee a day is it. This counts toward your water intake. If you’re a coffee fiend this can be a hardship but your body will adapt if you give it time.

The first stage of the diet lasts two weeks. This is the stage where the most rapid weight loss may be seen. You’ll hopefully start getting over any food cravings during this phase. The second phase is about reaching your weight loss goals and the third about maintaining that loss.

The fact that the South Beach Diet has a maintenance plan is excellent. Yo-yo dieting is extremely unhealthy, and probably makes it easier to gain more weight. If you learn to maintain a healthy weight you can improve your health tremendously.
