After the Workout

Exercise is important to a healthy lifestyle, and most people who exercise are doing so for just that reason. However it is far too easy to skip the final step of your workout.

If you watch people at the gym, many finish a nice, tough workout and head straight for the locker room to clean up and head back to the office or home. It’s easy to do, many people are in a rush, but it’s not the healthiest way to exercise.

Failing to do a cool down routine after exercising limits your benefits somewhat. You are more likely to be sore and tired if you don’t take the time to cool down. Your muscles need this time to gain the most benefit from your routine.

Your cool down routine doesn’t have to be all that time consuming. Five minutes walking - not jogging, not running - walking on the treadmill helps to get your heart rate down. Five minutes of basic stretching exercises benefits your muscles and keeps them from contracting too much.

This basic routine also gives your body time to remove waste products generated by your exercise routine. These products can be a part of why you feel sore later. The more your body gets rid of, the better you’ll feel later.

Drink some water as you cool down too. You want to replenish your body. Many people have a fondness for sports drinks, and you can certainly choose to drink one rather than water, just make sure you’re getting some new fluid into your body to avoid even mild dehydration.

Your exercise routine is not the time to let your hectic day control you. It should be a time just for you and your health. Don’t shortchange yourself.
