Beware the Fitness Myths!
One of the most dangerous things about trying to get fit are all the really convincing myths out there. It can be really difficult to know what works, what doesn’t and what is frankly not safe at all.
So what are some of the myths?
Fast weight loss
How fast can you really lose weight? You see the claims of 30 pounds lost in 30 days. Is that realistic?
Such weight loss could really only happen through surgery or water loss. A pound of fat is 3500 calories. Obviously you can’t cut that many calories from your diet, and it takes a lot of exercise to burn that many calories. If you burn 500 calories per hour, that’s 7 hours of exercise per day. Sound probable to you?
It’s good to be sore the day after exercising
No!!
Soreness can result from a new routine, but if you have it regularly you are either overdoing it and not letting your body recover or you aren’t warming up correctly. You should still feel good the day after exercising.
If I can’t keep up a regular fitness routine I should give up
Nonononono!!
Any exercise is better than no exercise. You may not see the benefits all that clearly, but they are present.
This myth is why so many people give up so quickly on their New Year’s Resolutions. They miss a day or a week and consider the whole thing a failure. There is no need to give up. Just do the best you can.
There are other fitness myths out there, but these are all I will cover for today.
