Does Jogging Increase Knee Arthritis Risk?

Many people fear that doing jogging and other high impact exercises can increase their odds of eventual knee arthritis. It’s a popular belief.

Guess what? It doesn’t appear to be true, at least according to recent studies.

The study followed participants over nine years. Their average age was 53, so old enough to experience problems during the survey. Some were sedentary, some walked for exercise while other ran or jogged.

Just take a look at these results; you may be surprised:

Among those who did no exercise, 7.5% got knee arthritis with symptoms over the course of the study; 4.9% of those who walked less than 6 miles a week also got knee arthritis with symptoms, along with 6.4% of those who walked 6 or more miles a week. To a scientist, Felson says, those differences are not significant.

Of course, some people are still better off with low impact exercise. If you already have knee problems, you do not want to exacerbate them.
