Getting Back into the Fitness Habit
Many things can break a fitness habit. Overtime at work, family events, illness, even favorite television series can be used as an excuse to not exercise.
Hopefully the day comes when you realize that you really need to start exercising again. Then it’s a matter of rebuilding the habit.
The first thing to consider is what disrupted your routine in the first place. If the problem is that you didn’t have a routine, that was probably a part of why you quit exercising. Find a routine so that you are just used to exercising at a realistic time several times per week.
If you had a routine disrupted, figure out if the problem still exists or if it is gone. If the problem still exists you will need to find a way to work around it.
Figure out what sort of routine will work for you. Being realistic about the times and days you really work out is vital to your success. Overambitious goals can leave you discouraged and make it easier to quit entirely when they don’t work out. Build up to a routine when in doubt.
Be prepared to work hard at it for a few weeks. It takes time to build good habits, and the time before the habit is established is the most difficult.
Tell yourself it’s okay if you have to miss a day, so long as it doesn’t happen too often. Stuff happens. Life happens. That doesn’t mean you failed. You fail if you quit. You succeed if you don’t let the little problems stop you.
