If You Can’t Stand the Heat…
It’s probably time to cool off for a little.
One of the biggest dangers when you exercise outdoors during the summer is overheating. Heatstroke is serious. Your body’s temperature goes over 104 degrees F, you can’t sweat, you’re cramped, breathing is shallow and your skin is hot and dry.
One of the simplest ways to avoid heatstroke is to not exercise outdoors during the hottest part of the day. This can be challenging if you’re hiking or playing at the beach, when the hottest part of the day is a fairly popular time to be out.
But if you are exercising in the heat you need to know when to stop and take a break. You should stop and rest more often when it is hot. Take a nice drink of cold water… not too much at first if you’ve been exercising hard. Sports drinks are good as well, of course.
Wear the right kind of clothing for exercise. Something light and loose fitting will be far better for you in hot weather. Doesn’t have to be trendy, just comfortable and something that lets the air cool you. A wide brimmed hat is a good idea.
Don’t overeat when you’re going to be exercising in hot weather. You’ll feel better after a small meal than after a large one when the weather is warm.
Exercising in warm weather can be hard to resist, but knowing when to stop is a huge help. Enjoy the warm weather while it’s here.
