How Important is Regular Exercise?
I’ve talked before about how any exercise is better than no exercise. It’s a great way to keep from giving up when you can’t meet your fitness goals. So is regular exercise all that important?
It really depends on what you want to accomplish. Are you wanting to be just a little bit healthier or do you have solid fitness goals?
Solid fitness goals are the best for you overall, of course. The point I like to make about not having to keep precisely to your fitness goals is that you don’t have to give up when you can only fit in a little bit of exercise. But doing enough to improve your overall fitness or to maintain a good level of fitness is definitely best.
Exercising 3-4 times per week is best for most people. It keeps you from being overly sedentary and keeps you fit. That’s an amount that shouldn’t be too hard to fit into your lifestyle.
The trick is knowing what works for you and your family. If you have young children and childcare is an issue you can try either trading off days with your spouse or a friend, using the gym’s daycare, getting a sitter or exercising at home.
There are plenty of exercise options at or near home. Walk, get an exercise video or home gym equipment, just for starters. Play with the kids outside. Things like this can fit even into hectic family lifestyles.
Just remember that a regular exercise routine will give you the most benefit overall. You get some benefit every time you exercise, but to become truly fit you need to workout regularly.
