Keeping Fit During the Holidays

This is a very busy time for most people. The holidays mean lots of shopping to get done and lots of parties with family and friends. And of course that means all kinds of temptations that really don’t go well with your fitness goals.

Step one to keeping fit at this time of year is to simply not give up on your exercise routine. Yes, you may have to put off the occasional workout because there’s a party to go to, but do your best to keep things up and make up any lost time. Even half a workout is better than none, however.

The food at this time of year is the real danger. Just think about the wonderful snacks coworkers may bring in, office parties, family get togethers… your waistline can be in real trouble if you don’t keep things under control.

If you’re attending a potluck, be the one to volunteer to bring the healthy dishes or appetizers. Make a really great salad or bring a veggie tray… something with high fiber foods that will really fill you up.

If you aren’t bringing food, eat some high fiber, low calorie foods such as the aforementioned vegetables or salad before going to the party. You won’t be as hungry so you won’t overindulge quite so badly on the party foods.

Eat slowly so that your stomach has time to realize that its full. The faster you eat the more you tend to eat, so slow down and enjoy the flavor to its fullest.

When coworkers bring in tempting treats, say no whenever possible. Keep bringing in those healthy snacks so that you aren’t tempted just due to hunger.

However, the occasional treat is just fine. Keep your portion size under control. You don’t need the biggest cookie or largest slice of pie to enjoy the special foods available at this time of year. A more moderate serving will still give you the pleasure of eating fun foods without quite so many calories.

Finally, don’t get discouraged that it’s more difficult to keep to your healthy habits at this time of year. You need to enjoy your life, not feel guilty every time you have a little fun. Keep your excesses moderate so that you have less to make up for later.
