Shall We Dance?

Dancing is a great form of exercise. It’s one of my daughter’s favorites. There’s of course the casual dancing she does just for fun around the house. But her grandmother signs her up for ballet lessons once or twice a year because she (my daughter) enjoys them so and begs to be signed up whenever we skip a session.

Of course, being a growing child, something she often needs is dance shoes, most especially ballet slippers. I’m definitely going to have to tell my mother-in-law to check out Just for Kix to see if the prices are better than what she’s been paying locally.

That means we’ll also have to check out the dancewear section. She’s outgrown the outfit from the last round, I believe, and we want to enroll her again this summer. I always like to encourage my children to do what they enjoy, and if it encourages physical activity, so much the better.

I don’t expect my daughter to be a professional dancer – she’s not the classic build for it, and frankly seems more interested overall in theater than dance. Then again, she’s 5 and we have years yet before any of this is likely to matter. But I do like having a rule that she regularly has to be enrolled in some sort of activity that involves exercise. Always something she enjoys, no pressure to beat everyone else. Because I think children should be allowed to discover ways to exercise that they enjoy. It’s a great way to build a healthy habit.
