A lot of people want an instant answer to their food issues. Something that will help them to eat more healthy foods without such a struggle over old favorites. But perhaps thinking slow and steady is a better way to go.

One of the first things you need to recognize are the things that cause you to eat too much. For some it’s stress, others boredom, others just simply have a lot of bad eating habits.

It’s important to recognize the areas that give you the most trouble. If you can either break the habit or find a healthier, lower calorie snack for those times, you could be on your way to controlling your weight. That can be a wonderful thing.

Of course, many people need help with this, which is why diet plans are so very popular. And there’s nothing wrong with needing a little help. If it were easy, we’d all be our own ideal weights.

The next thing is to recognize that you can’t always change all your habits in one easy shot. It often takes time. It definitely takes discipline. And if you leave yourself feeling too deprived, it will be easy for all your new control to be broken. Tiny steps are better for most people.

This can carry over into your fitness habits too. If you can convince yourself to start something as simple as a 15 minutes walk daily on your lunch break, you can build up into more fitness habits. Combine better eating habits with better fitness habits, and your overall health should improve.

Of course, there’s no saying exactly what results you will get. These things do vary by the individual, but if you’re eating better and working out, that’s an accomplishment you can be proud of.

Being too busy to work out is one of the most common reasons why people don’t exercise. Just about everyone uses it at some point. But even if you don’t have the time to break for even 15 minutes to take a walk you can sneak in a little bit of exercise.

Think about times you just stand around… brushing your teeth, cooking, that sort of thing. Leg lifts or walking in place can get you moving just a little bit more. It’s not a lot of exercise but it is something.

Put a little more effort into housecleaning. This in itself is fair exercise. Do a bit more of it and work harder at it.

Work out whenever you watch television. It may be a leisure activity, but it doesn’t have to be so sedentary. I like using a Gazelle while watching television, doing crunches, leg lifts, whatever. An exercise ball can be nice too. Fitness balls are also nice. The exercise shouldn’t be anything that makes it too hard to watch your show, or you probably won’t keep up with it. Then again, there are always commercials!

Working out at the computer is harder. This is one of the hardest areas to work out, and it may not be possible to do much about that. You can move your legs, but generally not much and not terribly effectively.

When you shop, park further out. The added walk really won’t be all that bad, and it’s generally much easier to find a spot.

Stealth exercise isn’t generally enough to get you fit, but it’s better than not trying at all.

Having a perfect figure is the goal for many. I know that I’d love to get my middle under control once again, but that has been my challenge since having two children, one by C-section, I’ve had to struggle with a touch of extra weight and slack stomach muscles.

It’s hard. These used to be the areas that just came naturally to me. I drove people nuts that way.

But now it’s much harder, and I know it.

I’m still pretty fortunate, since my weight is just in the higher part of the healthy range. I work harder than I used to have to in order to keep it that way.

Being honest with myself about these physical changes has been a challenge. It’s easy to see it as worse than it is or better than it is. An honest self assessment is challenging.

So how do I go about it? How should you go about it?

The first thing is to know where you are in terms of where you want to be or where you feel you ought to be. I don’t own a scale, but I do check my weight occasionally at my inlaws’ house. It keeps me lightly aware of where I’m at without obsessing over it. It works for me. It doesn’t work for everyone.

If weight is your concern, know where you are compared to what’s considered healthy. If you’re just a little higher than you want to be, and still in the healthy range, things aren’t that bad. If you’re far from where you would like to be, you should be aware of that too.

If overall fitness is your goal, you need to be honest about that too. Plan out how you’re going to reach your goals. Work toward them. When life gets in the way, admit it and allow yourself to get back on track.

Being honest with yourself about what you are and are not achieving will help you to succeed, but it’s not easy. It takes practice. It takes a degree of honesty about yourself that is not always easy to achieve. But it’s also something that will help you to reach your goals.

Getting fit isn’t always that much fun. It can be a lot of tedium as you work toward the body you would like to have.

While a good exercise routine can help you to get fit, varying it is a very good idea. It can help you avoid the boredom that makes it easier to quit working out.

Varying your workout can be tricky. You don’t want to change to something that will bore you more and you don’t want to go to something so easy that you aren’t challenging yourself.

Sometimes it can be as simple as going out and doing something fun and active. Take a hike. Swim in the ocean when the weather is warm enough. Pick a new class at the gym. Do your routine in reverse order… except the warmup part, of course. Change the music you workout to, or add music if you haven’t had it in the past.

There’s no reason to stay bored with your workouts. There’s much more to getting exercise than doing a routine at the gym.

It’s important to keep hydrated when you work out. That’s why the need to drink plenty of water or other fluids is always emphasized when people talk about exercising.

But do you ever worry about overdoing it? Possibly you should.

It doesn’t happen often, but there is a condition called exercise-induced hyponatremia (EAH). It’s most common in endurance activities of 4 or more hours. It is the result of drinking too much water and it can be fatal. And don’t assume that sports drinks will take care of it. From the article:

Verbalis also says that sports drinks, which contain some sodium and potassium and carbohydrates, are basically water with a few additives. “There’s a misconception among the sports community that consuming sports drinks rather than water will protect you from becoming hyponatremic. That’s simply not true,” he says. “Drinking too much of anything puts some people at risk for potentially dangerous levels of hyponatremia.”

This can result in there being too much fluid for the kidney to process, and so the fluid goes into the blood, diluting the level of sodium.

So what should you be doing?

Drink when you’re thirsty. Don’t keep drinking just because you think you need to keep to a certain level of fluid intake.

A home gym sounds very expensive. When most people think of a home gym, they think of the big equipment. The exercise bike. The multipurpose workout equipment. The treadmill.

Many of these cost a couple hundred to even a few thousand for those who want to spend that kind of money. But you don’t have to spend a ton to have a home gym that will help you to reach your fitness goals.

Think about the things you really need to have. I love my exercise ball, for example. Takes very little room, I can use it for exercise and my kids can play with it. No worry about the kids pinching their fingers on it. And it cost under $30. It can be used in any room of the house.

If you walk, jog or run for exercise, a pedometer is a great idea that can help you to track your goals without costing a fortune.

That is the beauty of sites such as Amazon that offer a range of exercise, fitness and sporting goods, along with so much else. You can find great fitness equipment and not spend a fortune. Just buy the things you are actually going to use.

But do remember as you shop to not overdo. A bunch of little stuff can easily add up to what you would have spent on a single larger item. Start small with things you know you could use in your current routine, rather than building up with a bunch of stuff you HOPE you will use.

Start with what you know, then build when you are used to using your equipment. You’ll have a much nicer home gym and waste much less money.
